His age reflected on the census gives different dates of birth. He had resided in Florida since about 1848. He was married to Missouri Jane Roberts in Key West in 1857. He was living with his wife in the household of his brother in law, Charles Berry in Key West in 1860. Charles was married to Melissa Roberts sister to Missouri. When war came to Florida Jules along with his brother in law, Charles Berry, enlisted in Captain Henry Mulrennan’s Florida Volunteers Coast Guards on November 27, 1861 at Tampa, Florida. He served with this organization until April 25th, 1862. On that date, he was enlisted in Captain Smith’s Company (Key West Avengers), 7th Florida Infantry Regiment on April 25th, 1862 by Major R. B. Thomas at Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida for 3 years or the war. He is reported as present on all company rolls until an undated roll for the period April 30th, 1862 to November 14th, 1862. This roll documents his promotion from 1st Corporal to 2nd Sergeant on April 25th, and his transfer to the C.S. Navy on August 8th, 1862. He is on the muster list. He served in C.S.S. Chattahoochee and was on board in May of 1863. The ship and crew were responding to the capture of the schooner, Fashiion, by the Federals. The ship was not able to proceed further down the Apalachicola due to the water level at the bar. The ship anchored at Blountstown, Florida until then on May 27, 1863 her boiler exploded killing 16 members of the crew including and injuring many more. The ship sank and all this was durnig an incoming hurricane. His brother in law, Charles Berry, was among the casualties. After he and others returned to Columbus, Georgia to treat the wounded he was transferred to the C.S.S. Savannah. He then served on the C.S.S. Savannah until June 3rd, 1864 when he was wounded in action (shot through body) in the assault and capture of the U.S.S. Water Witch. In June 1864, while anchored in the placid waters south of Savannah, the Water Witch was surprised in the early morning hours by a Confederate raiding party comprising 11 or 12 officers and 115 men from the crews of the Georgia, Savannah, and Sampson. After the war he returned to Key West, where he lived with his wife Missouri, and three children (eldest born in 1861), and was employed as a seaman. He was living in 1880 in Key West with his family. His wife died in 1882. He filed for a pension in 1888. He was still living on date pension filed on 4 June 1888. He signed his name Jules Chabert..
