I am busy with a current project researching the officers and crew of the C.S.S. Chattahoochee. This research is to add to the archives of the National Civil War Naval Museum at Columbus, Georgia where I volunteer. I have found one of the crew that lived in Key West. He was buried there as well. There is a grave marker for him but there are discrepancies. His last name is spelled differently in several records but he signed the pension application with Jules Chabert. This is my research compiled to date Chabert, Jules Coxswain, C.S.N. 1825 to 1830 to after 1888 Jules Alexander Chabert was born in France in about 1820 to 1825. His age reflected on the census gives different dates of birth. He had resided in Florida since about 1848. He was married to Missouri Jane Roberts in Key West in 1857. His wife was born in the Bahamas. He was living with his wife in the household of his brother in law, Charles Berry, in Key West in 1860. Charles was married to Melissa Roberts sister to Missouri. When war came to Florida Jules along with his brother in law, Charles Berry, enlisted in Captain Henry Mulrennan's Florida Volunteers Coast Guards on November 27, 1861 at Tampa, Florida. He served with this organization until April 25th, 1862. On that date, he was enlisted in Captain Smith's Company (Key West Avengers), 7th Florida Infantry Regiment on April 25th, 1862 by Major R. B. Thomas at Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida for 3 years or the war. He is reported as present on all company rolls until an undated roll for the period April 30th, 1862 to November 14th, 1862. This roll documents his promotion from 1st Corporal to 2nd Sergeant on April 25th, and his transfer to the C.S. Navy on August 8th, 1862. He served in C.S.S. Chattahoochee, a new gunboat that was patrolling the Chattahoochee, Apalachicola, and Flint River system. Jules was on board in May of 1863. The ship and crew were responding to the capture of the schooner, Fashion, on the Apalachicola by the Federals. The ship was not able to proceed further down the river due to the water level at the bar. The ship anchored at Blountstown, Florida then on May 27, 1863 when steam was ordered her boiler exploded killing 16 members of the crew and injuring many more. The ship sank and all this was during an incoming hurricane. His brother in law, Charles Berry, was among the casualties. Afterwards he and others returned to the Arsenal Wharf at Chattahoochee, Florida and the dead were buried there. The crew then were transported by steamer to Columbus, Georgia to treat the wounded . He along with others were transferred to the C.S.S. Savannah in the Savannah Squadron. He then served on the C.S.S. Savannah until June 3rd, 1864 when he was wounded in action (shot through body) in the assault and capture of the U.S.S. Water Witch. In June 1864, while anchored in the placid waters south of Savannah, the Water Witch was surprised in the early morning hours by a Confederate raiding party comprising 11 or 12 officers and 115 men from the crews of the Georgia, Savannah, and Sampson. He was living in 1880 in Key West with his family. His wife died in 1883. He filed for a pension in 1888. He was still living on date pension filed on 4 June 1888. He and his wife had 4 children.
