W. Baldwin, aged 83 years, who, being by me duly sworn according to law, makes the following declaration in order to obtain the pension provided by act of the Legislature approved June 6, 1903, for indigent widows of deceased and aged Confederate soldiers and sailors: I am the lawful of John P. Baldwin, who enlisted 1861, in Captain ____ Company, ____ Regiment of the State of ____ and who while in actual service and in the line of duty as such ____, was on the 22 day of September, 1864, at Lake City, in the State of Florida died of typhoid fever while in actual service in the Commissary Department. He had ? of Major and I believe his rank was that of a Major - that I was legally married to said soldier prior to the first day of January, 1885, at Key West in the State of Florida; that I have been a bona fide resident of the State of Florida continuously since the first day of January, A. D. 1890; that I do not own property, real and personal, to the value of $800 in this or any other State, and am not otherwise enabled, or in a position to earn a livelihood, and have no income from any source sufficient for a livelihood; and that I have not purposely disposed of my property for the purpose of availing myself of the provisions of this act. Baldwin now deceased, that she has never remarried since his death, that she is a person of "respectability and good reputation," that she does not own property to the value of $800 in this or any other State, and that she is not physically or otherwise enabled to earn a livelihood, and has constantly resided in Florida since January 1st, 1890. Dickinson Pay from Feb. 15 1904 At rate of $96.00 per annum. ****************************************************************************************** State of Florida} County of Gadsden} Before me personally appeared P. W. White of said county and state, who first being duly sworn, deposes and says that he was appointed and commissioned by the war department of the late Confederate States, as Chief Commissary of the State of Florida, with the rank of Major, with authority to divide and said state into districts, and to assign to each district a District Commissary, and that he divided said state into five (5) Districts, and that he appointed and assigned to duty Major John P. Baldwin, then holding the rank of Captain in the commissary department, to duty of Commissary of the third district of Florida, with headquarters at Sanderson, in East Florida. That the said John P. Baldwin was afterward promoted to the rank of Major, and continued on duty as commissary of the said Third District, with headquarters at Sanderson, until driven from that post by the invasion of the United States Troops; after which time, this affiant changed his headquarters from Sanderson to Lake City, in the same District, either until the close of the war between the States, or until his death, this affiant does not now remember which. The date for the foregoing statement, I found in my letter press Book as Chief Commissary of the State of Florida, now in my possession. Major Baldwin was always recognized by all who knew him as a true patriot and an honest and faithful officer in the position he held. P. W.
