Stokes, (80) of Hilliard, FL, passed away October 17, 2003 in Jacksonville, FL after an extended battle with lung disease. He was born March 12, 1923 in Hilliard, FL, the son of the late Sheard Louis Stokes, and the former Rhoda Williams- Stokes. In October of 1943 John enlisted in the U. S. Army, a day that changed his life forever. Within months John found himself in the middle of war engaged in several battles including Utah, Omaha Beach, and the Battle of the Bulge, returning home in 1945 wounded, highly decorated, with 13 combat related medals including the Purple Heart, and the Bronze Star of Valor. Mr. Stokes worked in the trucking industry, driving for FL & GA, R.C. Motor Lines & Texas Motor Freight, retiring in 1980. His long time memberships include; the First Baptist Church of Hilliard, Teamsters Union #512, the Purple Heart Assoc, and the Disabled American Veterans. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Ollette Hinson Stokes; son, John (Elaine) Stokes, Jr., Boone, NC; Sister, Elizabeth Rowe, Callahan, FL; Grandchildren, Alan (Andrea) Stokes, Trenton, FL, Brian (Teresa) Stokes, Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Christy Bailey, Jacksonville, FL; Great Grandchild, Caitlin Bailey also of Jacksonville. Preceding him in death was his son Jerry DeWayne Stokes. Funeral services will be held 11:00AM Tuesday October 21, 2003 at the 1st Baptist Church, Hilliard, Florida 8100 C. R. 108 with Dr. Richie Allen & Rev. Butch Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
