State of Alabama, Covington County To the Honorable Board of Pension Examiners of said County: Your petitioner Russell H. Atkins respectfully represents to your Honorable Board, that he is a resident citizen of Covington Co., in the State of Alabama; that he enlisted in the service of the State or Confederate States as a private in Co., G, in the 57th, Regt., Ala., in April 1863, at Andalusia, in the State of Ala; that he was mustered in at Pollard, Ala., and was honorably discharged from such service at close of war or April 1865. That he did not desert the service of the Confederate States or the State of Alabama; that he was not wounded; that he is at the time of filing this application 70 years of age, and that his post office address is Opp, Route 2, Ala; that neither he nor his wife is possessed of property to the value of more than $2000. Your petitioner files herewith a complete schedule of all property owned by himself and wife. In consideration of the foregoing facts, your petitioner asks that his name be placed upon the pension rolls, in the class that your Honorable Board may adjudge him to belong, that he may participate in the division of the fund provided for the relief of Confederate and Alabama soldiers and their widows, by an Act of the General Assembly of Ala., approved April 24, 1911, in lieu of act approved Feb 10, 1899, amended March 5, 1901. D. One Thousand Nine Hundred and Twenty-four personally appeared before me, a County Judge in and for the county and State aforesaid, Russell H. Atkins who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is 78 years of age, having been born on the 16th day of March 1845, in the county of Calhoun, in the State of Florida. That he is a bona fide citizen of the county of Okaloosa, State of Florida. That he has resided in the State of Florida continuously since the ___ day of November, 1910. That he is the identical person who enlisted at Andalusia, Alabama, under the name of Russell H. Atkins, on the ____ day of April, 1863, in Company G, Regiment 57 of the State of Alabama in the service of the Confederate States Army and who was HONORABLY DISCHARGED at Charlotte, in the State of North Carolina, on the ____ day of April, 1865, on account of close of the war. That I served faithfully until HONORABLY DISCHARGED from the service of the Confederate States' Army in the year 1865, and did not desert the service of the Confederate States Army nor take the oath of allegiance to the United States until after the surrender of the Confederate Armies. That I was Charlotte, N. C. at the close of the war. That my postoffice address is Galliver, County of Okaloosa, State of Florida. Signed: His Mark: Attest: T. R. James, ? C. Dear Sir: Russell H. Atkins, whose is applying for a pension under the laws of Florida. Claims to have been a member of Company G, 57th Alabama, Confederate States Army. Please furnish me with the record of this soldier. Yours very truly, Comptroller ******************************************************************************* War Department The Adjutant General's Office Washington Oct. 22, 1924 Respectfully returned to the Comptroller, State of Florida, Pension Department, Tallahassee, Fla. The records of this office show that Russell H. Atkins enlisted Sept. 1, 1863 at Covington Co., Ala., as a private in Co. G, 57th Ala. Infy, CSA. In April, 1865, this Regt became the 27th Ala. Infantry by reason of consolidation; but there are no rolls on file subsequent to Dec. 31, 1863. Prisoner of war records show that the above named soldier as a private of Co. I, 27th Ala. Infy, was paroled at Charlotte, N.C., May 3, 1865 in accordance with terms of a military convention. Robert C.
