D. One Thousand Nine Hundred and 17, personally appeared before me, a notary public in and for the County and State aforesaid Mary Grimes a resident of Crestview, County of Okaloosa State of Florida, who being duly sworn according to law, makes the following declaration in order to obtain a pension under the provisions of Chapter 6818, Laws of Florida, approved June 4, 1915. That she is the widow of Wiley J. Grimes who was enlisted under the name of Wiley J. Grimes on the ___ day of March, 1861, in Company F, First Regiment of the State of Florida and who was honorably discharged at I think about Ringold, Ga., 1865, on account of sickness. (State here if husband drew a pension, and when.) Was drawing during the years 1908 to sometime in 1910. I think. That she was lawfully married to the said Wiley J. Grimes under the name of Mary Bishop in the County of Santa Rosa, State of Florida on the 30th day of December, 1871, and that she was not divorced from him, and that she has not remarried since his death, which occurred on the 28th day of March, 1911, now in the County of Okaloosa State of Florida. That she is a resident of Okaloosa County, Florida, and has continuously resided in the State of Florida since the ____ day of from a very small child. That she does not own property, including real estate, personal property, mortgages or other collateral securities, stocks or bonds in this or any other State to exceed in value the sum of Five Thousand Dollars. That the following is a true and correct statement of all property owned by me in this or any other State: Real estate, located at about 3 miles south of Milligan, Fla. 160 acres. . $400 Cattle, horses and other live stock 2 cows and calves. . . . . . . . . . . $ 50 Total. . . . . . . . . . $450 That she has heretofore been granted a pension from the State of Florida under Certificate No. ____. Armstrong, Notary Public ******************************************************************************* Affidavit to be Made by Comrade State of Florida} County of Okaloosa} Before me, a notary public in and for the State and County aforesaid, personally came William Crain of Holt, County of Okaloosa, State of Florida who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical person who enlisted at Milton in the State of Florida on the ____ day of March 1861, in Company F, First Regiment of the State of Florida, which organization was regularly mustered into the service of the Confederate States of America that he knows of his own personal knowledge that Wiley J. Grimes enlisted in Company F, First Regiment of the State of Florida at Milton, in the State of Florida, on the ____ day of March, 1861; that he served faithfully in the said organization until the ___ day of ____ don't remember, 1865; when he was furloughed on account of sickness, I think, at Ringold in the State of Georgia, and did not desert the Confederate States service nor take the oath of allegiance to the United States before the close of the War. (Here state whether the soldier was transferred to another organization, or not, and if captured or imprisoned, state when and where.) Was sent to hospital looked very bad and unable for duty - I understood he was given a furlough - I don't remember the date - but think it near close of war. I do remember he was with us in battles of Cherokee Springs, Perryville, Murfeesboro. I know personally of the above stated service, because I served with Wiley J. Grimes in Company F, 1st Regiment First of the State of Florida, and was HONORABLY DISCHARGED at near Bridge Park, in the State of Alabama, on the ____ day of May, 1865, by reason of close of war, and I did not desert the Confederate States service nor take the oath of allegiance to the United States before the close of the War. Sworn and subscribed before me this 19 day of March, 1917, and I hereby certify that the above declaration was fully made known to the affiant before swearing, and that I have no interest, direct or indirect, in the pension claim sought to be established by this declaration. Armstrong Notary Public ******************************************************************************* Affidavit to be Made by Comrade State of Florida} County of Okaloosa} Before me, a notary public in and for the State and County aforesaid, personally came Matthew Guest of Holt, County of Okaloosa, State of Florida, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical person who enlisted at Milton in the State of Florida on the ____ day of March 1861, in Company F, First Regiment of the State of Florida, which organization was regularly mustered into the service of the Confederate States of America; that he knows of his own personal knowledge that Wiley J. Grimes enlisted in Company F, First Regiment of the State of Florida at Milton, in the State of Florida, on the ____ day of March, 1861; that he served faithfully in the said organization until the ____ day of don't remember, 1865; when he was furloughed on account of sickness, I think, at Ringold in the State of Georgia, and did not desert the Confederate States service nor take the oath of allegiance to the United States before the close of the War. Was furloughed on account of run down in health was looking very bad- this was sometime near the surrender. I think it was in Ringold, Ga. He was with us in several fights. I know personally of the above stated service, because I served with Wiley J. Grimes in Company F Regiment First of the State of Florida, and was paroled at Atlanta, in the State of Ga., on the 9th day of May, 1865, by reason of close of war, and I did not desert the Confederate States service nor take the oath of allegiance to the United States before the close of the War. Armstrong Notary Public ******************************************************************************* Report of County Commissioners We, the undersigned, County Commissioners in and for the County of Okaloosa, Florida, do hereby report that at a meeting of the Board of County Commissioners held this day, the foregoing application of Mary Grimes for a pension under the Laws of Florida, was investigated by us; that we are satisfied that the applicant does not own property to exceed the value of $5,000, and that the representation made in the petition and affidavits are true, and that a pension should be granted to the applicant. P. Carr, age 72 years and Lottie Carr, age 64 years, both being by me duly sworn, deposes and says that they know that Wiley J. Grimes and Mary Bishop were duly married sometime in the year 1871 in the County of Santa Rosa State of Florida. The record of their marriage may be in County Judge's office of said County. Carr and Lottie Carr who being by me duly sworn deposes and says that they were present and know that Wiley J. Grimes - the husband of Mary Grimes departed this world about March 28th 1911 his body lies in the cemetery one mile from the town of Holt in state & county aforesaid. C. W. Armstrong Notary Public ******************************************************************************************** Letter April 25, 1917 Mrs. Mary Grimes, Crestview, Florida. Dear Madam: I am in receipt of affidavits by C. W. Carr and Lottie Carr as to your marriage to Mr. Grimes and his death. Upon examination of the affidavit relative to the death of Mr. Grimes, will say, that you will note from the order which I am returning to you, that certificate from an officer that the persons making the affidavit are reputable citizens, etc. should be attached. You will note further from the order, that where the proof of marriage is established by affidavit of witnesses in lieu of official record, that the affidavits should set forth the fact that the persons making the same were present at the ceremony. The affidavit you submit does not set forth the fact that A. P. Carr and Lottie Carr were present at the ceremony, they merely state that you were married some time in the year 1871. Kindly get the affidavits up in the proper shape as shown by the order, which I enclose and return to this office and the matter will be presented to the Board for its consideration.
