A. MCCALLUM OF OKALOOSA COUNTY, FLORIDA. WHEREAS, W. A. McCallum has been a citizen of the State of Florida for more than seventy (70) years, and is now eight-three years of age, and WHEREAS, said W. A. McCallum served in the War between the States in the Confederate State' Service as a Home Guard in and for the State of Florida for more than one year in the years 1864 and 1865, in the County of Walton, State of Florida, and WHEREAS, the said W. A. McCallum was honorably discharged from said Home Guard Company, and WHEREAS, the said W. A. McCallum served as Member of the House of Representatives of Florida, in the session of 1905, and WHEREAS, the said W. A. McCallum has never heretofore felt his need for a pension as such Home Guard and has never applied for same to the Pension Board, but is now very infirm and in need of a pension for his support, and WHEREAS, he cannot now, owing to the death of his comrades furnish proof sufficient for this service to effect a pension from the Pension Board of the State of Florida, under the General pension Laws of said State, and WHEREAS, during the whole life of said W. A. McCallum he has been a public servant when needed for the Confederate States and the State of Florida, therefore, BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF FLORIDA: SECTION 1. That the State Pension Board be and they are hereby directed to place the name of W. A. McCallum of Okaloosa County, Florida upon the Pension roll of this State to be paid in the same manner and at the same rate that other pensioners are paid. SECTION 1a. Provided that nothing in this act shall be construed to prohibit the right of the State Pension Board under the General Law of 1923 to remove the name of the pensioner from the Pension roll if after investigation such board shall find that the alleged soldier upon whose service the pension is based did not render service during the war between the states such as would entitle him to receive a pension or that he deserted the service. SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon its becoming a law. ******************************************************************************* July 30th, 1931 Mr. W. A. McCallum, c/o Hon. Purl G. Adams, Crestview, Florida, Mr. dear Mr. McCallum: With reference to the Special Law granting you a pension, I am sorry to inform you but the law of 1923 makes it the duty of the Pension Board to strike special pensioners from the roll who have not submitted such proof of their service or who have deserted. It will be necessary for you to submit proof in substantiation of your claim in you can and the Board will be glad to render such assistance in enabling you to do so as they can.
