Dear Miss Edge: I wish to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 11th, instant, enclosing application for pension of John V. Reeves of Niceville, which has been filed in the Pension Department for consideration of the Board. I note that he claims to have served in Capt. Kendrick's home guard co. of Alabama, while his witnesses appear to have served in the 37th, Alabama. I am writing to Alabama in an effort to get a line on his service from Alabama. Respectfully, Ernest Amos Comptroller Note: This Mr. Reeve's mind is very bad and I got the best information I could from him and his mind in the condition it is he is very feeble. If I can be any further help I will be glad to get any information I can. Yours Truly, Lula Edge ****************************************************************************** Letter State of Alabama Department of Archives and History Montgomery In Reply Refer to File No. A-911 February 16, 1931 My dear Miss Bowen: Concerning your inquiry of February 13, making application for the military service record of John V. Reeves, in the C.S.A., who claims service in Captain Kendrick's Company, we have not identified the command. We have carefully listed all Home Guard commanding officers, and Dr. Kendrick is not found therein. If Mr. Reeves can suggest what county this command was made up from, or even what Dr. Kendrick's home address was, this would be helpful. Even though he enlisted near Greenville, this does not identify him as being in a Butler County command. And further, the fact that he enlisted near Greenville, suggests Home Guard service, rather than regular service. You might ask him if he was ever associated with Judge Bolling's outfit. If so, then he saw only Home Guard service. Awaiting your attention, Very truly, Marie B. Owen, Director Miss Roumelle Bowen, Secretary Pension Board, Tallahassee, Fla. ******************************************************************************* Letter Feb. 19, 1931 Miss Lula Edge, Niceville, Fla. Dear Miss Edge: Referring to the application for pension of Mr. John V. Reeves, which has been filed in the Pension Department for consideration of the Pension Board, I wish to advise that upon inquiry to the Alabama Historical Dept., Dr. Kendrick's Company could not be identified. Mrs. Marie Be. Owen, Director of Archives & History suggested that if Mr. Reeves could advice what County this command was made up from and his address at the time he enlisted, perhaps that would help. The fact that he enlisted near Greenville she stated did not identify the command as a Butler County Command. I might suggest that Mr. Reeves make a statement of the service rendered by the Company to the best of his ability and send same to Mrs. Owen and from that she might be able to assist in obtaining proof of his service. Yours very truly, Secretary, Pension Board ******************************************************************************* Letter March 3, 1931 Hon. E. Amos Tallahassee, Fla. Dear Mr. Amos: I find on seeing Mr. John V. Reeves relative to his service rendered by the command that ?? the Butler County command and their service was rendered in and around Dog Creek. If I can be any further help let me know. Yours truly, Lula Edge ******************************************************************************* Letter March 20, 1931 Mrs. Lula Edge, Niceville, Fla. Dear Mrs. Edge: I wish to acknowledge receipt of your letter advising of the fact that the war service rendered by Mr. John D. Reeves was around Dog Creek, Butler Co., Ala. I am writing to the Pension Department of Alabama in an effort to obtain information relative to said services, if possible. Kindly ask Mr. Reeves if he was associated with Judge Bollings outfit, and let me know. Upon receipt of this information I shall be glad to go into the matter further. Yours very truly, Comptroller ******************************************************************************* Letter State of Alabama Department of Archives and History Montgomery In Reply Refer to File No. A-911 March 31, 1931 My dear Miss Bowen: Referring to your request of March 25, that we make an examination of the records of the command of Judge Bolling to determine whether the record of John B. Reeves' name is thereon, you are advised that he is not listed. Our roster of Judge Bolling's command was made in the fall of 1864. Very truly, Marie B. Owen, Director Miss Roumelle Bowen, Secretary Pension Board, Tallahassee, Florida ******************************************************************************* Letter April 17, 1931 Mr. John V. Reeves, Niceville, Florida Dear Sir: I regret very much indeed to advise you of the denial of your pension claim by the Pension Board at a meeting held on the 16th., on account of insufficient proof of your war service. If at any time you can furnish more proof of your service the Pension Board will be very glad to reconsider your pension claim, but as your claim stands at the present the Board does not feel that you have furnished sufficient proof to entitle you to a pension under the General Pension Law. Yours very truly, Secretary, Pension Board.
