D. One Thousand Nine Hundred and Twenty one personally appeared before me, a Notary Public in and for the county and State aforesaid, William P. Wright, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is 72 years of age, having been born on the 28 day of July, 1848, in the county of Franklin, in the State of Virginia. That he is a bona fide citizen of the county of Okaloosa, State of Florida. That he has resided in the State of Florida continuously since the 1st day of Oct., 1895. That he is the identical person who enlisted at Orange Court House, under the name of William Preston Wright, on the 1st day of March, 1863, in Company D, Regiment 58, of the State of Virginia in the service of the Confederate States with Stonewall Jackson Brigade and who was HONORABLY DISCHARGED at Appomattox Court House, in the State of Virginia, in the 6 day of May, 1865, on account of surrender of Gen. Robt. E. Lee to Gen. Grant, service being no longer required. That he was present when Gen. Lee surrendered to Grant and that the army was required to take the oath of allegiance in place of discharge papers which occurred May 6, 1865. (Here give date and place of capture, imprisonment, exchange or parole.) I was as stated above in Jackson Brigade, and after his death the Brigade was directly under Gen. Lee. That I served faithfully until HONORABLY DISCHARGED from the service of the 6th May in the year 1865, and did not desert the service of the Confederate States nor take the oath of allegiance to the United States until after the surrender of the Confederate Armies. (Here state whereabouts at close of Civil War.) That I was with Gen. Robt. E. Lee when he surrendered to Gen. U. S. Grant and was disbanded there May 6, 1865. Reg. was transferred from Stonewall Jackson Brigade to Gen. Lee and he and said Henley served together during bal. of the war and that he has no knowledge of any other comrade. That his commission officers were Gen. Lee, Gen. Jackson, Capt. Boothe and that he supposes they are all dead. This 5 day of May, A. D. 1921. His X mark: William P. Henley of Florala County of Cov., State of Ala., who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical person who enlisted at Port Rail in the State of Va. on the ____ day of 1861, in Company E, 6th Ala. Regiment of the State of Ala., which organization was regularly mustered into the service of the Confederate States of America; that he knows of his own personal knowledge that William P. Wright enlisted in Company D, 58 Regiment of the State of Va. at Orange Court House in the State of Va., on the 1 day of Mch., 1863; that he served faithfully in the said organization until the 6 day of May 1865; when he was HONORABLY DISCHARGED on account of Gen. Lee's surrender to Gen. Grant at Appomattox in the State of Va., and did not desert the Confederate States service nor take the oath of allegiance to the United States before that close of the War. (Here state whether the soldier was transferred to another organization, or not, and if captured or imprisoned, state when and where.) Service being no longer required. The 6th Ala. Reg., as transferred to Gen. Lee when Jackson was killed. I know personally of the above stated service, because I served with William P. Wright in Company E 6th Regiment Ala. of the State of Va. and was HONORABLY DISCHARGED at Appomattox in the State of Va. on the 6 day of May 1865, by reason of Robt. E. Henley of Laurel Hill Rt. 4 County of Covington, State of Ala., who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical person who enlisted at Camp Watts in the State of Ala. on the ____ day of 1861, in Company E 6th Ala. Regiment of the State of Ala., which organization was regularly mustered into the service of the Confederate States of America; that he knows of his own personal knowledge that William Preston Wright enlisted in Company D 58 Regiment of the State of Va., at Orange Court House in the State of Va., on the 1 day of Mch. 1863; that he served faithfully in the said organization until the 6 day of May 1865; when he was HONORABLY DISCHARGED on account of surrender of Gen. Robt. E. Lee at Appomattox Court House in the State of Va., and did not desert the Confederate States service nor take the oath of allegiance to the Untied States before the close of the war. Wright, has not been found on the muster rolls of Co. D, 58 Va. Inf. C. S. A., which rolls partly cover the period from Nov. 1, 1861 to Feb'y. 28, 1865. Nor on the muster rolls of Co. E, 6th Ala. Inf. which rolls partly cover the period from May 15, 1861 to Oct. 31, 1864, dated Feb. 1, 1865. One William T. Wright, Pvt. Co. D, 58th Va. Inf., C. S. A., enlisted July 23, 1861, in Franklin Co., Va., and was discharged April 22, 1862, at Lynchburg, Va. on surgeon's certif. of disability. Date of discharge also shown as April 15, 1862. P. C.
