The reason is explained as follows: After noticing that Orlando was included in both the Brevard and Orange county 1860 records, the transcriber researched the 1860 county lines. In 1860 the Brevard and Orange counties boundaries were different from today, 1999. According to the 1860 Florida map, the Orange County line ran through what is now the middle of Orange County, with some of the present day Orange County in the Brevard section. (See 'MapGuide to the U.S.Federal Censuses 1790-1920' by William Thorndale and William Dollarhide, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1987). The town of Orlando is represented in both the Brevard and Orange county census records. The Orange County Census was taken by Jonathan H. Stewart who started his enumeration on the 4th of July. This enumeration includes Orlando entries on pages 542-550, hndwritten pages 11-16. In the Brevard county census, the town of Orlando is enumerated on pages 99-103. On page 99 is recorded: Free Inhabitants in Brevard Division in the County of Brevard State of Florida enumerated by me, on the 28th day of June, 1860, Wm. B. Watson Asst. Marshall, Post Office Orlando in Orange Co., Fla. The Brevard/Orlando section is included in both the Brevard and Orange county transcriptions. The researcher is encouraged to personally view the microfilm records.
