Blackman received a telegram last Tuesday announcing the death on the morning of that day at her home in Naugatuck, Conn., of Mrs. John Howard Whittemore, a former parishioner of Dr. Blackman's and an intimate friend of the family. Dr. Blackman's book, ''The Making of Hawaii," which was published in 1899 by the Macmillan Company, was "Inscribed with love and gratitude to John Howard Whittemore and Julia Spencer Whittemore." A number of people in Winter Park still recall Mr. and Mrs. Whittemore and their children, as guests for many seasons of the Old Seminole Hotel. At that time and for several years subsequently, Mrs. Whittemore owned the lot opposite the Batchelor home, which afterwards came into the possession of Rollins College, and where Dr. and Mrs. Blackman now live. It was through the suggestion of Mr. Whittemore to Mr. W. C. Comstock that Dr. Blackman was called to the presidency of the college, to whose funds he contributed many thousands of dollars, and of whose Board of Trustees he was at one time a member of years ago. Mrs. Whittemore was a woman of singular loveliness of person and of character, as well as keenness of intellect; a son and daughter survive her.
