     CATTS Jr., SIDNEY JOHNSTON, son of former governor CATTS, made an 
honorable record of service with the army during the World war, and is now 
engaged in the practice of law at West Palm Beach.
     He was born in 1894 near Selma in Lowndes County, Alabama, son of SIDNEY 
J. and ALICE MAY (CAMPBELL) CATTS.  He came to Florida with his father when he 
was about fifteen years of age, and in 1915 graduated from Palmer College at 
DeFuniak Springs.  Following that he was a student in the University of 
Florida at Gainesville until April, 1917, when a few days after war was 
declared on Germany, he left the university to enter the first Officers 
Training Camp at Fort McPherson, Georgia.  Mr. CATTS was enrolled in the 
service two years and two months, and had a varied and interesting 
experience.  While at Fort McPherson he was commissioned captain of infantry 
in the Florida National Guard.  His regiment was the First Florida and was 
mustered into the Federal Army August 5, 1917, as a part of the 156th Depot 
Brigade.  About two months later the brigade was disbanded for the purpose of 
filling up vacancies in the Thirty-first Division, and at that time Mr. CATTS 
was sent to the Artillery Training School at Camp Wheeler.  After a short 
period he left the service and, returning to Florida, made volunteer 
application to the State Draft Board for a place in the Florida troops.  This 
resulted in his being sent to the Medical Department at Greenleaf, and in his 
final effort to get into a branch of the service that would take him overseas 
he made application to get back into the infantry and in July, 1918, reported 
for service as a private and on August 12 of that year was transferred to Camp 
Gordon and assigned to duty in the One Hundred Fifty-seventh Depot Brigade.  
Within a few weeks he was commissioned as second lieutenant and ordered to 
join the Thirty-first Division, with which he went overseas in September, 
1918.  Though he reached France only about two months before the close of the 
war, he was sent to the front lines with the First Division and was in the 
renewed drive following the Meuse-Argonne offensive, and was located in that 
sector when the armistice was signed.  He was with the first American troops 
to cross the Moselle into Germany, hiking their way to Coblenz, where he was 
on duty several months, principally on the staff of the Provost Marshal, Third 
Army.  Mr. CATTS reached home and was discharged July 9, 1919.
     September 1, 1919, Mr. CATTS was appointed adjutant general of the State 
of Florida, and in that capacity during the next thirteen months organized 
thirteen companies of the Florida National Guard in as many different cities.  
Thus after having served the state or national government in a military 
capacity for over three years Mr. CATTS resumed his work in the University of 
Florida, and was graduated L. L. B. from the law department in May, 1922.  In 
June of the same year he located at West Palm Beach and is now busily employed 
with his growing general law practice.  In March, 1918, Mr. CATTS married Miss 
SARAH PIERCE SAWYER, of Fort Payne.
