ZION HISTORICAL MARKER for MT. ZION CHURCH AND CEMETERY - with the PASCO COUNTY, Florida official seal above the following inscription: "Mt. Zion Methodist Church was organized in 1871. A two-story structure, built of hand hewn timbers and sawed rough boards on land donated by Nathan A. Carter -- with the second floor reserved for the Masonic Lodge -- was completed in 1872 when the first burial was made. The building was destroyed by a hurricane October 25, 1921. In 1977 the Mt. Zion Cemetery Association was formed to encourage perpetual care and maintenance of the cemetery." Placed by the Pasco Board of County Commissioners and the Historical Preservation Committee 1980. Personal observaton: Mt. Zion cemetery is an older burial ground with lots of World War Veterans' gravesites and many infant burials dating from the mid eighteen hundreds, but is still in active use. When this listing was last updated (early May 2001), there were pending burials. Two gravesites were being dug by Roberts Vault Company, which is only about 1 mile from the cemetery. I do not have ancestors buried in this graveyard, but because of the history and its close proximity to my home, I have had an interest in this cemetery for many years. It's been my privilege to be able to update & collect the data from this cemetery during the past year. I was astonished by the vastness of this quiet place, which at first impression was a small cemetery. It was a surprise to realize it has approximately 1000 burials. Unfortunately, there was some apparent vandalism in the past. Let us hope this doesn't continue. I would also like to mention that I was honored to meet and work with a fellow US GEN WEB volunteer, Mrs. J. M. Lee, during this time, who had graciously allowed me to follow her lead with Pasco County cemetery updates. She lent me her listing from this cemetery so that I was able to continue with data collection updates utilizing her last compilation through 1992. She does have ancestors & relatives interred here. --April L.
