When you reach the "Y"; take the left fork crossing Withlacoochee River and follow the road to the cemetery; which will be on your right. In 1880, the pioneer settlement of Ashley was beginning to grow. Thomas Franklin Campbell and Elam "Eli" Larkin, built the Baptist Church and on October 13, 1884, the town was granted a post office. By May 1886, the post office had closed and by 1910, the little settlement had practically disappeared probable due in some small part to the devastating freeze of 1894-95. The original church was eventually destroyed and the current church has an unusual history. Upon a time it was a store in Richland, in which the owners had been shot and killed. The building was eventually sold to the church and then moved to its present location. The present site is within 100 feet from where the original church stood and it became the New Withlacoochee Missionary Baptist Church. The well-kept cemetery dates from around 1890. The original Lanier Bridge was made of logs felled by slaves and built on this site around 1850 by the James Lanier family. This quaint old bridge with it's weathered log pillars; though rebuilt several times, has withstood father time, mother nature and even the dark swirling waters of the Withlacoochee River. That is until this year. It seems that the super minds we elected to do our thinking decided that this unique link to our past was too dangerous and rickety. So, out with the old, in with the new. What now spans the Withlacoochee River is what those great "steel trapped" minds call "a bridge" and has all the appeal of tinker toys! So much for warmth and durability! Special Notes: There are a number of graves bearing hand made markers with the last names only. Someone has made an effort to locate and mark them. Perhaps the families, where possible, can add first names and dates. Weeks, Jessie M. - another marker gives the birthdate as Dec 13, 1882. Coleman Ferguson Funeral Home gives the date as Nov 14, 1883. Again, I must thank my friends Elaine Wyckoff and her mom for doing all the updates. They are so appreciated. If you note discrepancies, you may E-mail me and I will make every effort to correct the information.
