Although the cemetery is a Safety Harbor Cemetery, changes in boundaries over the years have placed it within the city limits of the City of Clearwater. The Safety Harbor African-American Cemetery was discovered by Pinellas County lot clearing crews in 1996. The oldest legible marker is that of young Samuel E. Swann who died in 1896. It lies on Lot 15 of Ehle subdivision (Plat Bk 28 Page 39) SW 1/4 of Sec. 5 Twp 29 S, Range 16 E, Lying northerly and westerly of County Road 50. The land was originally Coachman Family property; story has it that the lot was donated by Coachman's as a resting place of African-Americans of the time. Coachman lost the land to the state during the depression and the property was purchased by Alfred and Louisa Ehle who created a subdivision with all but Lot 15. The Ehle's deeded Lot 15 to "St. Vincent Helping Hand Society in 1951." In 1953 St. Vincent deeded Lot 15 to the "Safety Harbor Colored Community". Unfortunately, the Safety Harbor Cemetery has fallen into a state of neglect over the years. It is not clear how many individuals were buried in this cemetery, as many were buried without headstones and a five of those remaining are no longer readable. Information for this database was procured by Pinellas Genealogy Society member Matt Pachosa. On August 30, 2000 he canvassed the cemetery and gathered additional information through interviews with two individuals who had family buried in the cemetery. In keeping with the PGS goal of preservation of genealogical material, it is our hope that family researchers or others with information on those interred here will contact us to help upgrade this information.
