He is a banker at Lakeland, and actively identified with all the best interest of that section of the state. He was born October 10, 1878. As a boy he had a country school education, and until he was twenty-three his work and activities were well within the horizon of a farmer's life. In 1901 he engaged in the grocery business at Mulberry. In 1906 he was appointed agent for the Royal Tailors, and represented that firm at Mulberry for three years. Mr. DE VANE had long cultivated ambition to study law, and about the time he left Mulberry he used his accumulated savings to enter Washington and Lee University. However, he gave up the study of law on account of lack of funds, and on returning to Mulberry in 1910 entered the real estate business. He soon located at Fort Meade, and while there was actively concerned with the management of three enterprises, real estate, ice manufacturing and electric lighting. Mr. DE VANE came to Lakeland in December, 1915. In January, 1920, he organized the Polk County Trust Company, and is now president of that institution. His business record thus briefly studied is proof of the fact that he has always been a hard worker and is a man of well-trained resources. He is affiliated with the Knights of Pythias. November 27, 1900, Mr. DE VANE was married, and his family of six children are: MEEKEY, DAPHNE, ONNIE MABEL, ELDRED, A. H., Jr., and HASSIE.
