(Sloan) Goodmon, told us that her "Pa," Elbert Sloan, took part in the battle of Chickamauga (Fact. See military records). After this battle he was so depressed and downhearted he tried to take his own life. He wrote of this attempt in a letter home. According to his letter: Elbert placed the barrel of his rifle in his mouth and attempted to push the trigger with his toe. This attempt was futile, and depressed him even more, for he stated in his letter, "even in this, I am a failure." The general tone of the letter was abject horror at what he'd seen and done. G-Grandfather Elbert was so sickened by these events that he felt he no wanted to live in this world, where man would do such things to his fellow man. I (Shirley [Turner] Shiver), saw the letter in the early 1950's, but at that time did not think to copy it. It is now lost. There was a time after the war that the Sloan family lived near Polk City. Grandmother said when they went to market in Groveland, it took three days. One day to drive there in a wagon. One day for market. One day to drive home.
