Avant were honored by their children on May 31, 1975, the occasion being their Golden Wedding Anniversary. The delightful affair was held in the banquet hall of the Crest Restaurant in Lakeland, Florida where dinner was served and later at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Lawhon, also in Lakeland, where the reception followed. The main table during the dinner was centered with a long, low arrangement of yellow roses interspersed with white lily of the valley and golden leaves. Glowing gold candles arose from the center. The other tables also held glowing gold candles encircled at the base with floral blossoms. Favors were miniature gold wedding bells daintily tied in white satin bows around white net enclosing mints. The blessing was asked by David C. Criss of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky and following dinner, a poem was read by Mrs. I. F. (Bud) Carter which was written especially for the honored couple and the occasion by Mrs. OraLee Adair of Thomaston, Georgia. The home of Mr. and Mrs. Lawhon, beautifully decorated for the reception, was adorned with floral arrangements and gold wedding bells. The guest register table, placed at the entrance of the living room, was covered with a hand- crocheted lace cloth with a four-branch gold candelabra placed to one side. The three tiered cake, with the third tier atop columns, held the miniature bridal pair significant of the Golden Wedding Anniversary, complete with the bride dressed in a gold gown. The three tiers were ornamented with spun sugar yellow rose and golden leaves with white lace encircling the base interspersed with gold leaves. Champagne, coffee and cake were served. Mrs. Avant wore for the occasion a long beige dress with a gold pin at the throat. Her corsage was her favorite flowers, white carnations, with gold bows and she wore gold slippers to complete her costume. During the evening, Mr. Avant presented his wife with a gold broach for the event and her gift to him was a gold key chain. Mr. and Mrs. Avant were married May 30, 1925 in Grady County, Georgia. They have 5 children, 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
