Times-Recorder  January 26, 1987

  Mr. Wilbur Emerson Avant age 81 of 306 Wilder Road, Lakeland, Florida died
  Thursday, January 22, 1987 at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida.

  Mr. Avant was a native of Mitchell County, Georgia and moved his family first
  to Orlando, Florida, and next to Winter Garden, Florida before settling in
  Lakeland, Florida.  In Lakeland, using his trucks, he founded and owned 
  Avant Spreader Service which he operated until his later years.  In his 
  later years, he enjoyed gardening, growing various fruits and vegetables.
  He also enjoyed making bird houses with his favorite style being one that 
  looked very much like a Colonial New England two-story house on a much
  smaller scale.

  He loved going to the restaurants for breakfast and had made many friends in 
  them where he also gained the affectionate name of "Pappy"     

  He and his wife, Lillie C. Avant, had celebrated their Golden Anniversary on
  May 31, 1975.  She preceded him in death on April 16, 1982.

  Survivors are two sons, Wendell Avant of Lakeland, Florida and Alvin Avant
  of Florida.  Also two daughters, LaVerne Carter of Americus, Georgia and
  JoAnne Criss of Tennessee, a sister Ella Stancil of Bradenton, Florida, 
  12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

  He was preceded in death by his wife and a sister Alphie Alderman of 
  Auburndale,Florida, also a son, Enoch Wilbur (Dub) Avant who died June 10,
  1982. There were small children who died at young ages who did not reach
  adulthood.
