August 22, 1932 Dear Miss Bowen, Your letter received and in answer will say that S. E. Hearst of Turner County Ga was placed on the Pension Roll 1909 and drew a pension until his death July 9 1924 he was approved and paid Pension under the name of S.E. Hearst and was maired under the same name. He maired Miss Delsie Smith Dec the 28th 1906 and that she lives at Palatka Fla now and has never remaired a second Husband and that his name appears on all records as S.E. Hearst. He was discharged at Appomattox Court House Va. April 1865. There was never any question as to his name. Hoping this will be satisfactory to you and any thing I can do let me know. Yours very respectfully Joe McHancock ***************************** THE TIMES-HERALD Palatka, Florida August 8, 1932 Dear Mr. Amos: Replying to your letter is reference to Mrs. Hearst's pension claim. I have been knowing of this old lady for some time past, but never personally. A short while ago Mrs. Richard Adams, former president of the local U.D.C., and wife of Mr. Adams, former banker, sent Mrs. Hearst (or Hurst) to me and requested that I help her to get a pension, saying that she was thoroughly entitled to it and was deserving, etc. Mrs. Hurst, so her daughter spells it, but "Hearst" as she says, is a plain "Georgia cracker woman" with "slighty little larning" and it is extremely doubtful if she knows just how the name has been or is now spelled. There is in my opinion no doubt but her husband is the "Hurst" cited in the official Washington records. Can you suggest the best way to clear up this cloud in name? The old lady is needy and deserving, so here's hoping that you can offer some way out for her. With all good wishes and best regards, Your old friend, Henry S. McKenzie ***************************** CONTRIBUTOR'S NOTE: Copy of the marriage certificate in on file that states: Marriage performed by W. A. Greer, M.G.
