Company D, 1st Florida Infantry Regiment, United States Volunteers, 1898-1899
COMPANY D
1ST FLORIDA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY REGIMENT
This company was organized at Palatka, Florida, by First Lieutenant D.W. Ramsaur.
The company proceeded to Tampa on May 12th, 1898, a distance of one hundred and
ninety miles, per order of Governor Bloxham. Went into camp of instruction on Fort
Brooke Reservation on May 13th. Mustered into the service of the United States on
May 20th; broke camp on May 27th, and marched to DeSoto Park, a distance of about
three miles, with the Regiment, per order of Major General William R. Shafter. In
Camp of Instruction at DeSoto Park from May 27th to July 21st, 1898; broke camp at
DeSoto Park and proceeded to Fernandina with the Regiment by rail on July 22nd, per
order of the Secretary of War. In camp with Regiment at Fernandina from July 23rd to
August 22nd; broke camp at Fernandina on August 23rd, and proceeded to Huntsville,
Alabama, with the Regiment by rail, a distance of about seven hundred miles. Arrived
in Huntsville on August 25th, and went into temporary camp in the city until August
26th, thence into permanent camp about two miles from the city, where the company
remained until mustered out of service on January 27th, 1899.
