An efficient and popular member of the official executive corps of Santa Rosa County is Sheriff Mitchell, who is giving a vigorous and effective administration as sheriff of his native county. He was born at Milton, the county seat of Santa Rosa County, and the date of his birth was February 14, 1895, and he is a representative of old and honored families of this section of Florida. His parents, BENJAMIN and EMMA (AMOS) MITCHELL, still reside at Milton, the father having been born in this county in 1868 and having long been identified with agricultural and livestock industry in Santa Rosa County, where his parents, WILLIAM and MARGARET (JERNIGAN) MITCHELL, remained until their death, a family tradition being to the effect that in the Mitchell ancestry is a strain of Indian blood. The maternal grandparents of Sheriff Mitchell were HARRY and MARY (ROBINSON) AMOS, the former having been a son of Dr. MILTON AMOS, who came to America from his native Scotland and who was a leading physician and surgeon of his day in Florida. HENRY C. MITCHELL is indebted to the public schools of Santa Rosa County for his early education, which was supplemented by his attending, for two terms, the normal institute at Madison, this state. For three years thereafter he was successfully engaged in teaching in the schools of his native county, and he was then appointed deputy sheriff, under J. H. HARVELL. He retained this position three years, 1918 – 20, and in the autumn of 1920 he was elected county sheriff, with JOHN H. COLLINS as his opponent. His regular four year term as sheriff began January 4, 1921. The sheriff is a vigorous advocate of the principles of the democratic party, is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, is affiliated with the Scottish Rite body of the Masonic fraternity, as well as with the Mystic Shrine, and he holds membership also in the Knights of Pythias, including its adjunct organization, the Dramatic Order of the Knights Of Khorassan. Sheriff Mitchell is one of the popular young bachelors of his native county.
