1783 Spanish Census of East Florida File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Susan Peterson, petersnn@ix.netcom.com USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material. One of the first acts of the new Spanish government was to take a census of all residents. Britain had governed East and West Florida for only twenty (20) years between 1763 to 1783. During that 20 years colonists seeking land and trade came slowly into East Florida. These settlers arrived from the other colonies as well as from the European countries. During the American Revolution East Florida became a refuge for colonists wishing to remain loyal to the British Crown during the American Revolution. The Loyalists fled to East Florida from Georgia, North and South Carolina, and many of the other colonies. British Florida residents were given the option of remaining and retaining their property provided they would become Spanish subjects by swearing allegiance to the Spanish Crown and provided they would embrace the Catholic religion by conversion. Their only other option was to leave Florida and relinquish all rights to their land. The Treaty gave them 18 months to decide. Records in St. Augustine, Fla. are truly remarkable; some go back to the 1500's. If you have ancestors in the Florida territories (Spanish or British) you are lucky, indeed. Notes on the Data. These records are available on microfilm from the Florida State Archives in Tallahassee. This represents approximately 25% of the total census records. I have chosen to present this data in the census order rather than in an alphabetical sequence. It has been helpful for me to be able to see the names of near neighbors and has allowed me to identify several ancestors in spite of the variations on the spelling of names! If a column is blank, it is because that information does not appear in the census records. There may be errors in the extracted data; there are no guarantees that the information herein presented is 100% accurate.
