It is believed that this was due to the names of the US Army soldiers listed within the census. On the last page of this census the enumerator has written the following statement: I, Geo. J. Zehnbauer Ast. Mar. 18th Div. Fla. do depose & certify that the foregoing Schedule was enumerated by me according to my Oath and Instruction to the best of my Knowledge & belief. Geo. J. Zehnbauer Ast. Mar. 18th Div. Fla. NB. The inhabitants of this county were driven from it on account of the Indian hostilities and only a few of them have as yet returned. G. J. Z. The document further states: Sworn and subscribed this 27th Dec 1850 before me at St. Augustine, Florida. G. H. Bronson U.S. Dist Judge **** (four illegible letters) After the census was taken the pages were bound into books with two pages facing each other. A page number was then assigned and stamped into the upper right corner and the facing page received no number. These pages are now known as A and B pages (ex. 222a and 222b). When these census documents were transferred onto microfilm for the government archives the photographers wrote numbers on each page. This census contains numbers 435 through 437. This transcription has both numbers listed whenever possible to aid in genealogy research.
