D., HARRY LEWINGTON A native of Florida, member of a family prominent in business in the state, Doctor Merryday has had a successful practice as a physician and surgeon at Daytona for the past nine years. He was born November 17, 1884, son of WILLIAM A. and ELLA (LUCAS) MERRYDAY. His mother is now fifty-nine years of age. WILLIAM A. MERRYDAY was born in England in 1854, and at the age of seventeen came to the United States with his brothers L. H. and J. H. MERRYDAY. Their parents also came to this country, and located at Palatka, Florida. WILLIAM A. MERRYDAY spent some time near Macon, Georgia, and then came to Florida to grow oranges. He started his grove at Norwalk, near Drayton Island. It was a wilderness country, and WILLIAM MERRYDAY lived for a time in a log cabin with a dirt floor. Game was plentiful, and the table could be liberally supplied with venison, and wolves were frequently heard at night. The grove was on its way to commercial possibility when it was destroyed in the freeze of 1895. WILLIAM A. MERRYDAY after this set back opened a little confectionery store at Palatka, and gradually developed a large business, chiefly as a wholesale grain and crate dealer. He and his brother L. H. were partners in this business, while the other brother J. H. MERRYDAY became a wholesale grocer at Palatka. Doctor Merryday's parents are members of the Methodist Church. Of their six children two are now living, HARRY L. and HARLOW, the latter a student in high school. HARRY L. MERRYDAY acquired his early education in the schools of Palatka. As a young man he accompanied the Merryday family during 1903-04 on extensive travels and sojourns in Australia and New Zealand. After his return to America he entered the University of Kentucky at Lexington in 1907, subsequently took up the study of medicine in the University of Louisville, and after one year there continued his professional education in the Jefferson Medical College at Philadelphia for two years. He then returned to the University of Louisville and received his degree in 1914. During 1921 Doctor Merryday took special work in diseases of children at the Harvard Medical School. He has been in active practice at Daytona since 1914. In 1921 he became city physician and health officer. He is active in the various medical organizations, is one of the directors of the Chamber of Commerce, is a member of the Rotary Club and the Elks, and his hobby and pastime is baseball. He seldom misses a game played in this vicinity. Doctor and Mrs. Merryday are affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church. June 27, 1914, soon after receiving his medical degree, he married Miss SALLIE K. WALTON, of Gallatin, Tennessee. They have one daughter, MARTHA ELLEN.
