D., FRED While the permanent and winter residents of Daytona Beach have in the aggregate represented all sections of the world, no one citizen is more thoroughly cosmopolitan and a more interesting man of the world than Dr. FRED PULESTON, an accomplished physician and surgeon and head of the Puleston Sanitarium of that city. Anything like an adequate account of Doctor Puleston's career would require at least a volume, and his life's experiences can only be briefly suggested here. He was born in London, England, November 22, 1864, son of WILLIAM and JANE (THOMPSON) PULESTON. His father was a merchant of London and Manchester, and had extensive relations with the oriental trade. FRED PULESTON, one of a family of three sons and five daughters, acquired his education at Manchester, and almost immediately after leaving school he began satisfying a taste for travel and experience which took him to some of the most remote corners of the globe. His first coming to the United States was in 1881. He spent something over a year in Southwestern Texas, around San Antonio and Luling, where he was on cattle ranches. He then went back to England, and subsequent journeys took him over France, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Canary Islands, Monaco, Tangier, Egypt and the Hebrides Islands. Doctor Puleston is perhaps the only American who has an intimate knowledge of the famous Congo district of Africa. Moreover, he is probably the last survivor of the associates of Stanley in the famous Stanley expedition. During his experiences in Africa he walked over 6,000 miles in the country drained by the Congo. While there he learned to speak the language of the natives. In subsequent years Doctor Puleston. again came to America, took up the study of medicine, graduated from the Iowa State University in 1901, and was engaged in the practice of his profession at Monticello, Iowa, until 1916. In that year he came to Daytona Beach in search of relief from asthma, and has found complete cure here. He then resumed private practice, and built the sanitarium which bears his name, where he dis- charges his responsibilities as a skilled physician and surgeon. In 1916 Doctor Puleston married RUBY JOHNSTON. He is a Knight of Pythias and a democrat, is a believer in the fundamental truth of religion. and throughout his life of varied experiences he has always aimed to play the game squarely whether he was hunting big game in Africa or associating with the Congo savages. He is a thorough American. Doctor Puleston has a fluent command of several languages. He is one of the few men who thoroughly appreciate the environment and the spirit of Kipling, who is his favorite author.
