His general store has been a source of supply of the necessities used by this community since 1905. No one else has been in business here so long as he, and he has achieved a well deserved prosperity. Mr. Webster, who has been a resident of Florida for forty years, was born at Hamilton, Ohio, in 1858, son of Dr. JAMES K. and AUGUSTA (HUGHES) WEBSTER. His parents were also natives of Ohio. His father died in 1894, at the age of fifty-nine and his mother in 1920, at the age of eighty. Dr. JAMES K. WEBSTER was a graduate of the Pulte Medical College of Cincinnati, and was a very able man in his profession. He practiced at Dayton Ohio, until 1883, and then brought his family to Florida, locating at Altoona in Lake County. There with the assistance of his son Edson he planted twenty-five acres to orange trees, and was a pioneer in the citrus industry of that section. This grove had come into a high state of productivity when it was practically destroyed by the freeze of 1895. Doctor Webster also continued the practice of his profession after coming to Florida. EDSON H. WEBSTER was reared and educated at Dayton, Ohio, and after coming to Florida he devoted most of his time and energies to orange growing until 1903. In that year he became clerk in a store at Altoona, and later was with the firm of Miller & Company at Palm Beach. From there he came to Daytona Beach in 1905 and brought a small stock of goods, the first to be offered for sale in the city. His place of business has always been in the same location, at the corner of Main and Peninsula streets. Mr. Webster has taken a public spirited interest in the community. He is a democrat, a Methodist and a director of the Atlantic Bank & Trust Company. January 1, 1883, he married HATTIE PORTER, daughter of A. J. PORTER, of Connersville, Indiana. They became the parents of one child, HOWARD H., who died aged about eight years.
