Mr. Whipple was born in the City of Brooklyn, New York, on the 15th of September, 1872, and is a son of NELSON M. and AGNES (SWIMMERTON) WHIPPLE, the former a native of the State of New York and the latter of New Jersey. As a successful architect and contractor NELSON M. WHIPPLE gave special attention to the erection of churches and the finer type of houses, and he developed a prosperous business along this line in Brooklyn and the original New York City, both being now included in Greater New York. Both he and his wife continued their residence at Brooklyn until their deaths. Their children were seven in number, six sons and one daughter. The public schools of the national metropolis afforded HENRY U. WHIPPLE his early education, and in the meanwhile he began to assist in his father's building operations, when he was a lad of fourteen years. With the passing of time he familiarized himself with all details of architectural, building and contracting enterprise, and he continued to be associated with his father's business until he had attained to his legal majority, when, effectively fortified in technical knowledge and practical experience, he initiated independent business as a contractor, with residence and headquarters at Monticello, New York. There he continued his operations until 1916, when, by reason of his impaired health, one physician ordered him to come to the South, while another informed him it were better for him to remain in New York State and stated that his condition was such that he could not live to arrive at his chosen destination in Florida. In this dilemma, superinduced by differing medical authorities, he chose to make the trip to Daytona, Florida, and the result of the experiment and decision he has had no cause to regret, either in connection with his health or his business activities. He is now in the best of physical condition and has been specially successful in the business enterprise which he has developed in the city and state of his adoption. As a contractor he gives special attention to the erection of business blocks and apartment buildings, and he has become one of the leaders in this field of enterprise at Daytona, the while his civic loyalty and progressiveness indicate his deep appreciation of the attractions and advantages of his home city. He is an active and valued member of each the local Chamber of Commerce and the Kiwanis Club, and is affiliated with the Masonic fraternity. He and his wife are active members of the Methodist Church at Daytona, and he is serving as a steward of the same the while its Sunday school receives much attention and effective service on the part of Mrs. Whipple. In the year 1897 was solemnized the marriage of Mr. Whipple and Miss MARY HARDING, daughter of WILLIAM HARDING, of Rock Hill, New York. They have two children: RICHARD H., who was at the Officers Training Camp at Stetson University in the World war period, and is now associated with his father's business operations;. and BESSIE M. who remains at the parental home, and is a popular factor in the social activities of the younger folk of Daytona.
