Adkinson passed by on a skirmish line and that on the same day and before the engagement said Adkinson came back with a wound in his hand and that he talked with him, but that he did not see him any more during the battle. That when Adkinson came to their camps at first he told affiant that he had been transferred from the 6th. to the 7th. Ala. Cav. That although affiant never did see him while he was in the 6th Ala. Reg. it was the general report in the settlement from which he went that he volunteered in Capt. Ped Lee’s Company near Elba, Ala. That at that date, about the last day of March or the 1st of April, 1865, it was generally conceded that the war was near its close. Affiant further says that from the fact of his having known the claimant all his life and from what he had seen of him in the army and since he believes that xxx (sic) the said Jefferson C. Adkinson was loyal to the confederate cause and that he did not desert the confederate army. That the affiant never deserted the confederate cause or took the oath of allegiance until after the surrender and that he has no interest, directly or indirectly in the prosecution of this claim. W.G.W. Harper Sworn to and subscribed before me this the 19th. day of November, A.D. 1909 and I hereby certify that the above affidavit was fully made known to affiant before swearing and that I have no interest direct or indirect in the pension claim sought to be established by this declaration. In reply to your letter of Nov. 3rd. will say that I volunteered at China Grove in Ala., in 1862 or 1863 in Ped Lee’s Co. 1.6th. Ala. Cav. Capt Lee was from Coffee Co. I was transferred from the 6th. to the &th. (sic) Ala. Cav. and when I reached the 7th. Ala. Cav. under Capt. Brit Tarver they were engaged in battle at Nashville, Tenn. and I was only in it a very few days when I was wounded in the hip and had one finger shot off; after the battle the army fell back to Greensburough, Miss., and on or about the 20th. day o Feb. 1865 I received a furlough on account of my wounds, as best I remember for 60 days, and at the expiration of the furlough I went to Montgomery and got an extension for 20 days and before it had expired the war closed. I was in the 7th. such a short time and then during the battle that I did not get acquainted with any ones in it that I can rember, except that if I remember right a Mr. Hyer of Pensacola was Lieut in the 7th. Regmt. But I am of the opinion that he is dead. N.P.Campbell of Ponce de Leon, Fla, W.C.Mc.Lean of same office and John Stafford and D.G.Mc.Leod of De Funiak Springs belonged to the 6th. and I refer you to them for information as to my service in that Company. When I was at home on a sick furlough, I then lived near Brewton in Escambia County, Ala. and it can be proved by citizens there that I was at home on a furlough when the war closed. I feel confident that I am justly entitled to a pension and am in needy circumstances and will greatly appreciate it if you will proceed at once with the investigation as you have so kindly stated that you would and greatly oblige, Yours very truly, J. I know that you are overtaxes with answering letters of inquiry in reference to pensions and I decline writing any when I know there is nothing wrong. If you will do me a special favor to answer as to the status of two claims I will greatly appreciate it. The first is the claim of Jefferson C. Adkison (Have not the number). His was suspended for reason that war department had no record of his service, and he sent one affidavit as to her service and is ready to furnish several others to prove his service, the names of his witnesses were furnished to the Board some time ago but these parties were never interrogated as to his service. Some information as to his will be greatly appreciated. The other is the claim of Mrs. Sarah Alice Richardson. In her application she stated that she had been a citizen of Florida since Dec. 1895. The day of the month was requested and the information was furnished Page 034 that she came on the 11 day of December, and has never received any further notice. My contention is that if she came in Dec. 1895 and if she arrived here even before 12 o’clock on night of Dec. 31st she has been a citizen since 1895, however, I know you are only acting as Sec’y and these questions cannot be settled by you. Please give me status of her claim the number of which I am also unable to furnish at present writing. Yours Very Truly James A. McLean Page 035 Pension file – A Claim 17373. December 16, 1909 The Adjutant General, Washington, D.C. My dear Sir:- Jefferson C. Adkison claims to have enlisted at China Grove, Alabama, in 1862, or 1863 in Ped Lee’s Company, A. 6th Alabama Cavalry, C.S.A. He claims to have been transferred to the 7th Alabama Cavalry under Captain Brit Tarver and to have been wounded at Nashville, Tennessee. He claims further to have been granted a furlough of sixty days in February 1865 and to have been absent on this furlough at the close of the war, April 1865. This man’s record has been requested of your office, but no record was found. Will you please see if with the above information you can locate this man’s service. Yours very truly, Comptroller Page 036 17373 Daniel Campbell & Son Attorneys At Law DeFuniak Springs, Fla., Aug. 27, 1910 Hon. A. C. Croom, Tallahassee, Fla. Dear Sir:- Enclosed please find affidavits in reference to the service of J. C. Adkison in the Confederate Army. This seems to be a peculiar case, but it certainly is evident from the different affidavits that Adkison served in the Confederate Army, and there is no allegation by anybody that he ever deserted the army. It seems to me that the Board has the power to determine from all the evidence whether or not it is a fact that he served and did not desert. At the time of the close of the war the position of the army, especially that part of it, was such that the records might omit a great many things, at least the record that they have in Washington City. Now, I desire you to let me know when the Board will have a meeting. I do feel that this is a worthy case and it should be given very careful consideration by the Board. I will be absent for several days, but would be glad if you would let me know when the Pension Board will have its meeting and I would be glad to be before the Board at that meeting to present my views in behalf of Mr. Adkison. I would not think of asking the Board to pension a man who I had any idea had deserted, but the peculiar status of this case leads me to believe that it is an error in the record of the department or a lack of the records being complete that are now in Washington City. With best wishes, and thanking you for the attention you may give this matter, I am, Yours friend, Daniel Campbell DC/M Enc. Affidavits N.P.Campbell, A. F. Miller, J. A. I will submit them at the next meeting of the Board of Pensions and will advise you of whatever action the Board takes in his case. The Governor is going away to-morrow and I am unable at present to say when the Board will meet. With sincere regards, Yours very truly, Comptroller. Page 038 Pension file – A November 3, 1909 Mr. J. C. Adkison, De Funiak Springs, Fla. Dear Sir:- I am directed by the Board of Pensions to advise you that a further investigation of your service has been ordered made and that your payments will be held pending this investigation. The Board has been advised that no records can be obtained from the War Department of your service in any organization mentioned in your claim. If you will write me fully giving the date and place of your enlistment, the number of your regiment, whether cavalry, infantry or artillery, the letter of your company and your captain’s name, the date and place of your discharge I will try to help you in this investigation. I have filed your certificate with your voucher while this matter is being investigated. Yours very truly, Secretary to the Board of Pensions. Adkison, who was on the pension roll from this County under the old law and who made proof under the new law, says he cannot hear from you in reference to the reason why he was not allowed, or rather why the voucher was not sent him. He was a faithful old soldier ad (sic) is a good citizen. There must be something wrong about the information you have in reference to his name not appearing on the roll of any company, as he can and has proved service. It may be the cavalry service instead of the infantry. Please advise me at your earliest convenience. I enclose herewith an affidavit of W.G.W.Harper in support of the pension claim of Jefferson C. Adkinson. Mr. Harper lives in Ala. and by chance happened in town today and knowing something of the service of Mr. Adkinson I took his affidavit to save the trouble again perhaps of getting it. Please attach to his application. He was advised that his application after being allowed was suspended for the reason that the records at the war department did not show his service. As he advised you he can get plenty of proof as to his service in the 6th. Ala. Cav., but this affidavit is about all he can get as to his service in the 7th. after having been transferred.
