Sherrer 1917 - 2010 SFC retired Mercer Sherrer, 93, passed away Saturday, Oct 9, 2010 at his residence. He was born Jan 15, 1917 in Enterprise, Ala., to Precly and Mattie Scott Sherrer. Mr. Sherrer was a longtime resident of DeFuniak Springs, Fla. He was a Baptist by faith and an active member of East Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict, serving his country in the Merchant Marines, U. S. Navy and U. S. Army, before retiring as a sergeant first class with more than 25 years of service. He also worked with Civil Service at Eglin Air Force Base before retiring, and received recognition for innovative designs as a machinist. He spent many years as an active volunteer with the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission. Mr. Sherrer was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters. Mr. Sherrer is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Clydus Rhodes Sherrer, of Defuniak Springs; three daughters, Gail Russell and husband, Winston, of Hattiesburg, Miss., Carol Zarantenello and husband, Michael of DeFuniak Springs, and Linda Ledford of DeFuniak Springs; two sisters, Bonnie Cason of Baltimore, and Elizabeth Eberhart, of South Carolina; seven grandchildren, Joe Russell, Lee Ann Smith, Allen Mercer Russell, Gina Powell, Amy Toler, Kimberly Reece and Kristen Allen; and 15 great-grandchildren. A time of visitation will be from 6 to 8 pm Tuesday at Clary-Glenn Funeral Home, 230 Park Ave., DeFuniak Springs. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct 13, at East Baptist Church, 910 Bay Ave., DeFuniak Springs, with the Rev. Dean Whitaker officiating. Burial will follow in Sandy Creek Cemetery, with military honors at the graveside.
