Started about 1850 by Jens Nissen of Denmark it has a colorful history. Jens Nissen (John Nelson) was born in Haderslev, Denmark, April 22, 1812. When twelve years of age he left home and shipped on a vessel. After years on the sea the ship he was then on docked at New York. The crew were given shore leave and that evening in a bar-room a brawl developed which became so intense that fearing some members had been killed, Jens and a pal, unable to speak the language, changing his name to John Nelson he bought land South of Vernon in 1838, married the daughter of the man who had befriended him and built a home. With his wife he attended the Methodist Church but was dissatisfied as he did not agree with the Methodists. After contacting members of the Baptist Faith he was instrumental in starting a Church at the situation of the Mossy Head church. About ten years later a lady who was interested in seein the Church grow deeded forty acres of land to the Church and Ebenezer. ELLIOTT, L. M., b. Mar 14 1899 d.
