They entered Florida in 1821 when the U.S. acquired it from Spain. It was between 1821 and 1825 that the Holmes Valley Methodist Mission was established. This was the predecessor of the Moss Hill United Methodist Church. The mission was in existence when Washington County was formed in 1825. Record show that the Methodists and the Baptists often shared the same building. There is a great deal of evidence indication a block house, northwest of the present church, was the original meeting place. Several of the old maps list is as a fort. The log structure served the Methodist for many years before the building of the Moss Hill Church. They shard it with the Baptists until they built their own church, Ebenezer Baptist Church in 1846. Moss Hill United Methodist Church remains a simple, unpainted, weathered, wood frame structure little changed from its birth. It is often called Florida's "Little Church in the Wildwood". The new church, one of the area's first all-frame structures, was built in 1857 on public land. Igdaliah (Eagle Eye) Wood acquired the 40 acres surrounding the church and gave it to them. A Cemetery was established next to the church. Wood was a farmer and land developer from Gadsden County. He was also a lay minister. Wood's deed was signed by Abraham Lincoln on Dec 5 1861. Though Florida had seceded with the start of the war, Wood had filed and made payment for the land prior to the Civil War and Lincoln did not recognize the cessation fo Florida. It is believed the actual title was not delivered until the end of the war. Bill Tiller selected the pine used for the church construction and it was sawed at the Davis Mill (later called the Filbert Mill) on Hard Labor Creek. There was separate seating for the men and women and for the slaves. The descendants of former slaves founded the Sylvania A.M.E. Church a few miles away from the Moss Hill Church. A cemetery was established next to it. Black and White congregations remained separate following the Civil War and The Reconstruction Era. Moss Hill sits about 200 - 300 yards from the actual valley and a stream about 300 yards southeast of the church provided drinking water for the congregation. There is a welll-worn path between the church and the creek that was restored by the Audubon society in the early 1980's. The history of the church and cemetery was obtained form, Holmes County (copyrighted 1983) by E. W. Carswell, 418 South Fourth Street, Chipley, Florida 32438. Printed by Williams Printing Company, Chipley, Florida. Directions: From the the intersection of Highway 90 and State Road 77 go south to Greenhead. Take the Greenhead - Vermon highway west also know as County Road 279. The Church and cemetery are located on the left about 6 miles. There are many unmarked graves, some so old they have become almost abliterated. During later years stones have been erected and graves are cared for, but as a rule, these are for later burials. The following is record to the best of my ability, as I read and recorded the information from the headstones. ANDERSON, Amy M., b. Nov 24 1845 d. Mar 10 1876, w/o S.W. Anderson BANKS, Edward B., b.
