Black August 18, 2003, 1:42 pm The Atlanta Constitution, 1882 OBITUARY Died, at his home in Fannin County, Ga., August 9, 1882, Hon. John Baptist Dickey. Mr. Dickey was born in North Carolina February 11, 1817. In 1842 he removed to the mountainous regions of northeast Georgia, being one of the first settlers of that section of the state. Here he lived, in the same old homestead, until His death, rearing a large family, all of whom are Influential members of society, proving good citi- zens who are ever ready to discharge their duties as such. He was one of the most enterprising, public spirited citizens of his section. In politics he had no aspirations. Yet at the instance of his fellow- citizens, he was twice induced to enter the political arena. The first time he was sent to represent his people in the constitutional convention for reconstruction. Next he was sent as state senator from his senato- rial district. In both instances he received the al- most universal suffrage of his constituency. He had the entire confidence of the community in which he lived as well as of those to whom he was elsewhere known. During the long, lingering illness which terminated fatally, he bore his suffer- ings with that patient resignation known only to those fortified by Christian grace. Only a few days before his death, with every member of his family around his bedside, the great sorrow of their hearts plainly depicted on every face, he - conscious to the last - perceiving their distress, bade them be content, say that, if consistent with the will of his Heavenly Father, he would be glad to be spared to his family and country for a few more years, but if not, he was ready and wil- ling to go hence, fearing neither death nor the grave, and feeling that he was but retiring to rest and peace. Whith this feeling he requested each and every member of his family to promise to meet him in the better land. Thus passed away a man honored by his neigh- bors, beloved by his friends, doted upon by his family, a loving husband an indulgent parents, a worthy citizen and a sterling statesman. May they all meet "In the land of the leal" Additional Comments: He was the son of George and Hannah Taylor Dickey of Fannin County, Georgia. He was the father of James L. and John R. Dickey of Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia. This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 2.8 Kb
