A native of Appling County, she had lived in Pierce County for a number of years. She was a member of Big Creek Primitive Baptist Chruch. She was widow of Alonzo Griffis. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Joe Thornton, Brunswick, Mrs. Tommy Thornton, Waycross, and Mrs. Ottis Sinclair, Patterson; four sons, Newton Griffis, Jacksonville, Fla., H.O. Griffis, Waycross, C.F. Griffis, Blackshear, Emory Griffis, Folkston; one sister, Mrs. Jim Thornton, Screven; 29 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Clough-Pearson Funeral Home. WAYCROSS JOURNAL-HERALD, Tuesday, March 4, 1975 SOURCE: WAYCROSS JOURNAL-HERALD, Tuesday, March 4, 1975 Mrs. Essie Griffis BLACKSHEAR–Funeral for Mrs. Essie Davis Griffis, 83, who died Monday morning, will be held at 4 p.m. tomorrow at Big Creek Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Ivey Griffis and Elder Claude Thornton, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be carried to the residence of H.O. Griffis in the Woodard Chapel Community near Waycross late this afternoon and will remain until time for the service. Clough-Pearson Funeral Home is in charge.
