A native of Coffee County, Mr. Batten was born April 28, 1941 son of Dewey and Wilma Wright Batten. Mr. Batten was a U.S. Air Force veteran having retired after serving his country for 20 years. During his Air Force career, Mr. Batten worked in communications where he held a top-secret security clearance. He also worked in other agencies of the Government during his Air Force career. Mr. Batten was of the Baptist faith and was preceded in death by sister, Marie Courson Courson; brother, Bobby Batten; and stepfather, Elmon Hall. Survivors include, daughter, Sharon Carraghan and husband Shawn of Nazareth, PA; granddaughter, Kayla Carraghan; 2 brothers, James E. "Punkin" Hall and wife Candis Candis of Douglas, GA; Ronnie Hall and wife Dorothy of Pearson, GA; 3 sisters, Verneal Verneal Grantham of Douglas, GA, LaRue Wright and husband Johnny of Douglas, Debbie Hall of Pearson, GA, brother-in-law, Ralph Courson of Pearson, GA, sister-in-law, Mary Ruth Batten of Axson, GA; several nieces and nephews also sur survive. Funeral services for Mr. Batten were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, January 14, 20 2009 at Tanner Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Johnson and Mr. D.Q. Pittman of officiating. Special musical selections included "Whispered Prayers" rendered by by CD, "Take My Hand Precious Lord" and "Go Rest High On That Mountain" re rendered by Andy and Teresa Harper, accompanied by Sara Gentry, pianist. The interment followed in Tanner Cemetery with full military honors provided b by a U.S. Air Force Honor Guard Contingent from Moody Air Force Base, Valdosta, G GA. Serving as active pallbearers were Andy Harper, Terry Morris, Kevin Grantham, Johnny Gillis, Jonathan DeCosta, Eddie Bagley. Honorary pallbearers were Jack and Marie Corbitt, Nita Walker, Nell Tanner, Harry Mullis, Harold Cady, Jimmy Mullis, Rowan Corbitt, Johnny Melvin Corbitt, LeRoy Wright, Jimmy Hall, Danny Wright, Bobby Mullis, Eugene Paulk, Kenneth W Walker.
