Born in the family home outside Willacoochee, GA on March 9, 1921 to the late Mamie (McPhatter) and Ira Highsmith, Lois was the fourth of ten children. She graduated from high school in Willacoochee, GA where she played on the high school basketball team. She joined the military in 1944 and had basic training in Fort Oglethorpe, GA and Thomasville, GA prior to being deployed first to the shipyard in Brunswick, GA then to a military hospital in Suwannee, NC. After discharge from the army, she met and married Arthur Corbitt, newly returned from the war as a decorated veteran and POW. Throughout the 57 years of their marriage, Arthur, Lois and their 3 children lived first in Georgia, then for many years in Davie, FL until Arthur retired in 1986 and returned to Mora Rd, Willacoochee, where Lois continued to live until shortly before her death. Mrs. Corbitt was preceded in death by her parents, her infant son, Raymond Edward Corbitt, six brothers and sisters and her husband, Arthur. Survivors include two sons, James Corbitt and Arlene of Willacoochee, GA and Jimmy Corbitt of Willacoochee, GA; daughter, Carolyn Simpson and Gary of Willacoochee, GA; brother, Edsel Highsmith of Douglas, GA; sisters, Irene Nolan of Willacoochee, GA and Laura McKinnon of Willacoochee, GA; grandchildren, Tim Corbitt and wife Kimber of Crystal Beach, FL, Jason Corbitt and wife Angel of Cumming, GA, Wendy Osborne and husband George of Conway, SC and Gary Don Simpson of New Jersey; two great grandchildren, Aiden and Madeline; several in laws, nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Mrs. Corbitt were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 13, 2007 at the United Methodist Church in Willacoochee, GA with Rev. Eddie Morrison officiating. Special musical selections included "Amazing Grace" and "When the Role Is Called Up Yonder" rendered by the congregation under the direction of Craig McKinnon with Kellie Ruth Lockwood accompanying at the piano and "Old Rugged Cross" rendered by soloist, Craig McKinnon with Kellie Ruth Lockwood accompanying at the piano. Soft music for the prelude and postlude was provided by Kellie Ruth Lockwood, pianist. The interment followed in Arna Cemetery. Serving as active pallbearers were James Corbitt, Jimmy Corbett, Tim Corbett, Jason Corbett, George Osborne Don Nolan. Relihan Funeral Home of Pearson, GA was in charge of arrangements.
