Davis, age 106 of Baptist Village Retirement Home in Waycross, GA, formerly of Axson, GA passed away peacefully in his sleep, Saturday morning, October 21, 2006 at Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross, GA. Mr. Davis was born in Clinch County, March 6, 1900, son of George W. and Bitha Geiger Davis. He was a long time resident of Axson, GA, but had resided at Baptist Village Retirement Home for the last several years. He was a retired farmer and school bus driver for the Atkinson Co. School system. During WWII, Mr. Davis served as a truck driver for a German POW camp in Axson, GA. After retirement he donated his time for many years with the Salvation Army as a bell ringer and worked at Harvey's grocery store. He was one of the founding members of the Axson Church of God of Prophecy and for the last several years had attended Indian Mound Church. Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his wife, Inez Corbitt Davis and by 2 sons, Vernell Davis and Elton Davis. Survivors include four sons, Lee L. Davis and wife Betty of Atkinson, GA, Bunk Davis and wife Mary of Axson, GA, Billy Davis and wife Cecile of Axson, GA, and Orbie Davis, Jr. and wife Carole of Waycross, GA; five daughters, Luvelle Mullis of Axson, GA, Jean Joyner and husband Albert of Waycross, GA, Mary Ann Zorn and husband Bill of Axson, GA, Deloris Bennett and husband Huey of Millwood, GA and Evelyn Steele of Waycross, GA, and daughter-in-law, Elouise A. Davis of Millwood, GA, 36 grandchildren, 72 great-grandchildren, 52 great-great- grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Davis were held at 2 p.m. Monday, October 23, 2006 at Indian Mound Church with Rev. Clayton Davis, Rev. Chester Williams and Rev. Eric McClellan officiating. Special musical selections included "When I Wake Up, Sleep No More" rendered by the Davis and Bennett Families with accompaniment by Betty Davis, pianist, Caren Geiger and Huey Bennett, guitarist, "Take My Hand Precious Lord" and "Amazing Grace" rendered by Leigh Clark, soloist and pianist, "The Old Gospel Ship" rendered by Mr. Davis's grandchildren with accompaniment by Betty Davis, pianist, Huey Bennett and Caren Geiger, guitarist. Soft music for the prelude and postlude was provided by Betty Davis, pianist. The interment followed in Axson Cemetery. Serving as active pallbearers were grandsons Darryl Davis, Freddy Mullis, Steve Bennett, Mike Davis, Chris Davis, Troy Davis. Serving as honorary pallbearers were all other grandsons.
