A native of Coffee County, Mr. Gaskins was born Nov. 18, 1915, son of Dr. James Archie and Alma Paty Gaskins. He attended South Georgia College and Abraham Baldwin Agriculture College and graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in agriculture. Mr. Gaskins was a retired farmer and a county extension agent for many years. He served in the U. S. Navy as a lieutenant in command of LCT (984) in the Marshall Islands during World War II. His awards include the Asiatic-Pacific Star, World War II Victory Medal and American Theatre Medal. His church membership was at Beulah United Methodist Church. His daughter, Dawn Gaskins, preceded Mr. Gaskins in death. Survivors include: wife, Anne Deen Gaskins, Axson; one stepson, Michael Lang, Pearson; two step-grandchildren, Amber Lang and Shawn Lang; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Gaskins were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at Beulah United Methodist Church with Rev. Eddie Morrison and Rev. Charles Rooks officiating. Special musical selections included "Beulah Land" rendered by the Beulah Trio, Beth Paulk, Margaret Grantham and Tammy Paulk with taped accompaniment, "Where Could I Go," rendered by the Beulah Trio, with Beth Paulk accompanying at the piano, and "Amazing Grace" and "Victory In Jesus" rendered by the congregation with Beth Paulk accompanying at the piano. Soft music for the prelude and postlude was provided by Beth Paulk, pianist. The interment followed in Axson Cemetery with full military honors rendered by a U.S. Navy Honor Guard contingent from the U.S. Naval Base in Albany. Serving as active pallbearers were: Danny Hodges, Tate Hodges, Don Paulk, Mark Tucker, Mike Tucker, James Gaskins and Lyle Gaskins. All attending were considered honorary pallbearers.
