A native of Coffee County, Mr. Gilbert was born Nov. 29, 1930 son of Walter Joe, Sr. and Andelia Jordan Gilbert. He was a retired heavy equipment operator and member of Local #321 Operating Engineers Union in Lansing, Mich. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. His church membership was at Hargraves Chapel Church in Millwood, GA. His first wife, Dovie Ivey Gilbert preceded him in death. Survivors include: Wife, Alice Stone Gilbert of Pearson, GA, 2 daughters, Ladonna Gilbert (Greg) of Hazlehurst, GA, Lisa Kooti (John) of Americus, GA, 5 sons, Walter Joe Gilbert III (Tammy) of Fitzgerald, GA, Christopher Donley (Lisa) of Douglas, GA, Wallace Youngblood (Lessie) of Pearson, GA, Sim Youngblood (Linda) of Pearson, GA, Tony Youngblood (Christy) of Millwood, GA, 1 brother: Johnny H. Gilbert (Jeanie) of Homerville, GA, 2 sisters, Annie Harrell of Millwood, GA, Lucille Wheeler of Douglas, GA. 14 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Gilbert were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, 2009 at Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. W.R. Connell, Rev. Melvin Burch and Rev. Sim Youngblood officiating. Special musical selections "Shepard of my Valley" and "Going Home" were rendered by Christy Youngblood, Nicole Clement and Roxann Hutchinson with Christy Youngblood accompanying at the piano. Christy Youngblood pianist presented soft music for the Prelude and Postlude. The interment followed in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Serving as active pallbearers were: A.J. Kooti, Cameron Kooti, John Kooti, McKay Youngblood, Russell Hurlbert, Caleb Youngblood, Cristin Gilbert and Christopher Gilbert. Honorary pallbearers were, Eddie Stone, James Clement, Tom Youngblood, Lauren Carver, Dustin Gilbert and Danny Graham. Relihan Funeral Home of Pearson, GA was in charge of the arrangements.
