Miss Gillis, a native and life long resident of the Stokesville Community, was the daughter of the late George W. Gillis and the late Ann White Gillis. She was a former teacher of the County School System, as well as being a Sunday School Teacher at the Stokesville Baptist Church. She was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, John C. "Stokes" Gillis (Maude) and James O. "Dock" Gillis (Myrtle), 7 sisters, Katie Gillis, Alma Gallagher (Norman), Estelle Walker (Wesley) Elizabeth Jardine (Dunmar), Lois Gillis, Doris Deavours (George), Geraldine Parmalee (Charles), nephew, Dunmar Jardine, Jr. and niece, Ann Gillis Cooper. Miss Gillis was a faithful member of the Stokesville Baptist Church. She was survived by several nieces and nephews, including June Gillis Tanner, Celia Gillis Morrison, Dr. George Deavours, Anna Jane Waker Smith, Jack Deavours, Kay Gillis Pierce, Charles Parmalee, Beth Jardine Dowling, Ricky Deavours, George Gillis, Dr. Pat Carmichael and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Sunday, February 17, 2008, at 3 p.m. at the Stokesville Baptist Church, with Rev. Bob Pierce officiating. An Opening prayer was presented by a nephew, Jack Deavours. A special eulogy was presented by a nephew, Dr. George Deavours. The interment followed in the Stokesville Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Ashley Gillis, Andy Gillis, Wade Tanner, Barry Tanner, Jonathon Tanner and David Spivey. Members of the Stokesville Baptist Church served as honorary pallbearers. Special musical selections, "Sing The Wondrous Love of Jesus," and "Because He Lives," were presented as congregational hymns, with Patty Spivey at the piano. At the graveside, "Amazing Grace," was rendered by the congregation. Prelude and postlude, soft hymns were rendered by the pianist, Patty Spivey. Ricketson Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
