A native of Berrien County, Mr. Hayes was born April 6, 1923, son of Pearlie and Minnie O'Neal Hayes. he had made his home in Atkinson County and Berrien County most of his life. He was a retired farmer, a member and former officer of the VFW in Nashville, GA, former director of the Atkinson county Farm Bureau and served as an ASCS Committee Member. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and his church membership was at Beulah United Methodist Church. Survivors included his wife, Kathleen Luke Hayes of Willacoochee; two sons, Larry Hayes and special friend Diane Dean of Willacoochee, Tony Hayes and special friend Tonya Powell of Orlando, FL; daughter, Betty Anne Hayes Smith and husband W.M. of Pearson; two brothers, Vernis Hayes of Waycross, Carl Hayes and wife Betty of Moultrie; brother-in-law, Lavawn Luke and wife Shirley of Nicholls; former daughter-in-law, Marie Hayes; two grandchildren, Corey Hayes and wife Yolanda of Willacoochee, Brandon Hayes and wife Misty of Ambrose; four great-grandchildren, DyAnna and Hunter Hayes, Cody and Emma Hayes. Funeral services for Mr. Hayes were held Tuesday, February 3, 2015, at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. John Jacobs officiating. Special musical selections "Daddy's Hands" and "Wish You Were Here" were rendered by soloist Zenda Adair with tape accompaniment. Soft music for the prelude and postlude was played by Nelda Flanders pianist. The interment followed in St. Luke cemetery with Military Honors rendered by an Honor Guard Contingent from St. Stewart, GA. Serving as active pallbearers were Greg Luke, Chris Luke, Robert Hayes, Timmy Hayes, Mike Hayes, Duane Skipper. Relihan Funeral Home of Pearson, GA was in charge of the arrangements.
