Age 95, of Axson, GA passed away Thursday, August 06, 2015, at Satilla Care Center in Waycross, GA following an extended illness. A native of Appling County, Mrs. James was born May 19, 1920, daughter of Newton and Artie Adeline Frisbee Presley. She had made her home in Axson most of her life. During her working years she was assistant postmaster at the Axson Post Office and also served as a substitute teacher, mostly on the high school level. In addition to raising a family, she also helped her husband with the farm. She loved to work in her yard and at the age of 94 if you rode by her house you would see her working in her flower gardens. She had been a faithful member of Union Hill Church since 1942 (73 years) where she taught Sunday school for many years and also served as Chairman of the Union Hill Cemetery Trustee Board for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow James; a son Lynard Wayne James and a daughter, Pamela Joyce (Pam) James Witherspoon. Survivors include: Two sons, Boyd James and wife Peggy of Axson, Jerry James and wife Linda of Moultrie; daughter, Paula McMullan and husband Mike of Forsyth; daughter-in-law, Elaine James of Jacksonville, FL; son-in-law; Mike Witherspoon; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, four great-great- grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive. Funeral services for Mrs. James was held Monday, August 10, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Union Hill Congregational Christian Church with Rev. Gene Hughes officiating. The eulogy was given by her grandson, Ken James. Special music included “Whispering Hope” rendered by the congregation with Rebecca Andrews accompanying at the piano. Soft music for the prelude and the postlude was by Rebecca Andrews, pianist. The interment followed in Union Hill Cemetery. Serving as active pallbearers were grandchildren: Kevin James, Ken James, Thomas James, Benjamin McMullan, Mark McMullan, Joel Witherspoon, Seth Witherspoon. Serving as honorary pallbearers were: Bruce Corbitt, Ricky Bullard, Roger Smith. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial donations be made to Union Hill Church Cemetery Fund (C/O Peggy James 240 Woodrow Ln., Axson, GA 31624) Relihan Funeral Home in Pearson, GA was in charge of the arrangements.
