He enlisted in the U.S. Army after high school. He was a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran. He became a citizen of Augusta, GA, Richmond County, in 1971. He enrolled in Augusta Technical School nigh school and received a diploma in Instrumentation Technology in 1975. Mr. Joyner married Katherine Jewel Black in 1980. She was a lifelong citizen of Augusta, GA, Richmond County. She died January 1, 2014, leaving Parnell after 34 years of marriage. Mr. Joyner leaves behind three step-children, Deborah Ann Daniel, John Dennis Black, Jr, and Patricia Usry; also leaves behind many grand step-children and their children; three sisters, Marietta Poole, Blackshear, Ga, Lou Ellen Carter, Douglas and Earlene Stansell, Norfolk, VA; and many nephews and nieces and their children. Parnell remained in grief after his wife’s death until he died. Parnell passed this life Friday, January 2, 2015 at University Hospital. Graveside services will be held Saturday, January 10, 2015, from Hillcrest Memorial Park, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Timothy Pendrey officiating. Chance & Hydrick Funeral Directors served the family.
