A native of Coffee County, Mr. Knowles was born May 20, 1911, son of Henry and Maude Patrick Knowles. He was a farmer and a member of the Willacoochee First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled Veterans of America. Survivors include: Wife: Mrs. Nancy Lucille Jowers of Willacoochee, GA; three sons: Phillip Wayne Knowles and wife, Linda of Willacoochee, GA; Ronnie Knowles of Willacoochee, GA and Wayne Vaughn and wife Reba of Douglas, GA; One daughter: Nancy Lanier and husband Gil of McRae, GA. Grandchildren: Marshall and Donna Knowles of Kingston, NY, Cindy and Matt Austin of Broxton, GA, Randall Knowles of Willacoochee, GA, Denise and Jack Hamilton of Bickley, GA, Justin Vaughn, Gregory Vaughn, Gavin Vaughn all of Douglas, GA, Kevin Vaughn of Hazlehurst, GA, and Rachael Lanier and Daniel Lanier of McCrae, GA. 9 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Knowles were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008 with Rev. Bill Huffstuttler and Rev. John McMillan officiating. Special musical selections included "Old Rugged Cross" and "I'll Meet You in the Morning" rendered by the Willacoochee First Baptist Church Choir with Bonnie Kumberger accompanying at the piano and "Amazing Grace" rendered by the congregation with Bonnie Kumberger accompanying at the piano. Soft music for the Prelude and Postlude was provided by Bonnie Kumberger, pianist. The interment followed in Satilla Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by an Honor Guard Contingent from the U.S. Army. Serving as active pallbearers were: Randall Knowles, Marshall Knowles, Matt Austin, Jack Hamilton, Justin Vaughn, and Gregory Vaughn. Serving as honorary pallbearers were: Deacons of the Willacoochee First Baptist Church. Relihan Funeral Home of Pearson, GA was in charge of arrangements.
