"Jim" Mathews, age 63, of Axson, GA passed away Friday, May 2, 2008, at his residence, following an extended illness. A native of Irwin County, Mr. Mathews was born June 26, 1944, son of James and Eddie Lou Pitts Mathews. Mr. Mathews had made his home in Lakeland, FL for many years where he worked at Bartow Steel Company before becoming disabled. He had made his home in Axson for the past 4-1/2 years and attended Pearson Church of God of Prophecy. Mr. Mathews was U.S. Navy Veteran of the Vietnam Conflict. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jeanette Mathews. Survivors include, daughters, April McMullins of Minneola, FL; sister, Debbie Fussell of Lakeland, FL; 3 grandchildren. Graveside funeral services for Mr. Mathews were held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 6, 2008, at Old Jowers Chapel Cemetery, with Rev. Hardy Crosby officiating. Special musical selections included, "My Home' rendered acappella by soloist, Allen Jewell. The interment, with Military Honors provided by a U.D. Navy Honor Guard contingent from the Marine Corp Base in Albany, GA followed in Old Jowers Chapel Cemetery. Serving as active pallbearers were D.L. Mercer, Bob Tucker, Chris Moore, Will Burch, Randall Rhymes, John Bryant. Relihan Funeral Home of Pearson was in charge of the arrangements.
