A native of Atkinson County, Mrs. McCranie was born Cora Sue Kirkland on July 30, 1930, to John and Eva Kirkland of Pearson, GA. She married Shasta McCranie on July 18, 1952 at the First Baptist Church in Pearson and lived in Willacoochee until the last few years, when she spent time at Saint Simons Island. Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Shasta McCranie. Three children, Judson McCranie and wife, Elizabeth of Brunswick, Cynthia McCranie of Saint Simons Island and Mary McCranie Rich of Marietta. She had four grandchildren, Amanda, Emma, Anne and Randolph She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Eva Kirkland of Pearson, GA and a brother, Joh of Knoxville, TN. Mrs. McCranie was a graduate of the University of GA with a degree in home economics. She was a lifetime member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a long-time volunteer at the GA Agrirama of Tifton where she taught and demonstrated spinning, weaving and quilting. She was an avid reader and enjoyed learning about history and heritage of the southern region and preserving it for future generations. She participated in the Georgia Quilt Project in the 1990’s to help date and document quilts of Georgia. She restored her grandparents 1800’s farmhouse in Kirkland and enjoyed visiting historical sites and houses. She was laid to rest at the Willacoochee Cemetery on January 15, 2015, following a graveside service.
