A native of Breckenridge, TX, Mr. Mercer was born October 1, 1921, son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Mercer and Susie Tabor Mercer. Coming from Texas in 1950, Mr. Mercer made Atkinson County his home for the rest of his life. He was a retired Logging Supervisor for Union Camp Corporation and a member of Pearson First Baptist Church. An avid hunter, Mr. Mercer was in honorary member of the Alapaha Hunting Club and the Satilla F. & A.M. #163. He was a WWII Veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Mercer was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Gladys Mullis Mercer. Survivors include two sons, John Mercer and wife Lynn of Chestertown, MD, and Starling Mercer and wife Hilda of Axson; brother, Buddy Lee Mercer of North Texas; four grandchildren, Tish Hardee, Lindsey Lane, Tyler Mercer, and Jeremy Mercer; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Graveside funeral services for Mr. Mercer were held Sunday, January 25, 2015, at 2 p.m. at Satilla memorial Gardens in Douglas, GA with Rev. Mark Joyce officiating. Special musical number, “Amazing Grace” was rendered acapella by Mr. Mercer’s granddaughter, Lindsey Lane. Interment followed in Satilla memorial Gardens with military honors rendered by an Honor Guard Contingent of the U.S. Army. Serving as active pallbearers were Tom Morris, James Gore, William White, Mann Corbitt, Johnny Burch and James Joyce. Serving was honorary pallbearers were Bobby Mullis, Douglas Mullis, Stanley Wall, Jimmy Johnson, Keith Wall, Bo Fender and Foster Davis.
