Funeral services will be held in the chapel of Albritton–Beaumont Funeral Directors at 2 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Dewayne Franks and Drew Cox officiating. Burial will follow at Union Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Lax. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Albritton–Beaumont Funeral Directors. Pallbearers will be Terry Merchant, Tim Merchant, Randy Merchant, Kenneth Vi Vickers, Joby Vickers, Junior Troup, Freddie Liggin, Ben Liggin, Kenny Futch an and Allen Futch. Honorary pallbearers will be Harmon Tawzer, Ronald Cook, Billy Me Merritt, George Wright, Ken Harper, Joe Dixon, Phil Utley, Todd Bateman, Van Tu Tucker, Archie Fuller, Donnis Williams, Sephus Willis, Jerry Baker, Williford Je Jernigan, Darrell Jernigan, Jordan Flanders, Robert Stewart and George Harper. Mr. Merchant was born in Willacoochee Jan. 1, 1934 to Benjamin Butler Merchant a and Minnie Bell Holland Merchant, both deceased. He was also preceded in death b by his wife, Margie Pitts Merchant; and a sister, Mary Frances Liggin. Mr. Merchant was known as “Papa” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, w who he loved dearly. He was a cowboy who loved horses, rode cutting horses, and r rode in rodeos in his younger days. Mr. Merchant was a true UGA alumnus who l loved the University of Georgia. He enjoyed building houses, drawing house p plans, fishing, hunting and riding dirt roads. He also enjoyed mowing his grass a as he took much pride in his yard and was an avid knife collector. Among his survivors are his daughters and sons-in-law, Lynn and Roger Smith of Tifton and Donna and Keith Futch of White House, Tenn.; his stepdaughter, Jenia Bishop Beal of McDonough; his stepson, Randy Bishop of Columbus; his brother and sister-in-law, R.J. and Gloria Merchant of Leesburg; his sister and brother-in in-law, Ludell and Ty Vickers of Tallahassee, Fla.; his grandchildren, Drew and Michelle Cox, Deidra and Daniel Miller, Brandi, Morgan, and Jamie Futch; and his great-grandchildren, Madison, Blake, Kyleigh, Deanne and Dayton.
