A native of Coffee County, GA, Mr. Nugent was born September 25, 1944, son of Johnny B. and Ruth Aldridge Nugent. Mr. Nugent had been a long time resident of Pearson, GA before moving to St. Marys, GA 15 years ago. He was a former Georgia State Patrol officer, Police Chief for the City of Pearson, and worked in security at King's Bay Naval Base until poor health forced his retirement. He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Pearson, GA. He was also a member of the Peace Officers Association. Mr. Nugent was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Bernard Nugent and Joe Nugent. Survivors include his wife, Lynda Boyd Nugent of St. Marys, GA; son, Reynold Nugent and wife Allison of Willacoochee, GA; three stepsons, Todd Welch and wife, Vicky of St. Louis, MO, Michael Welch of Kingsland, GA and Brett Welch of Winder, GA; two brothers, Jack Nugent and wife Barbara of Pearson GA; and Paul Nugent and wife Carolyn of Brunswick, GA; three sisters, Mary Virginia Clark and husband Harry of Brunswick, GA, Helen Carter and husband Gillis of Willacoochee, GA, and Dolly Deen and husband Emery of Bainbridge, GA; grandchildren, Raven Nugent, Rhett Nugent, Royce Welch, Harry Welch and Leonie Welch and sister in law, Mildred Fryer of Atlanta, GA and children, Clara, Treta, Cynthia and Renee, Several nieces and nephews also survive. Memorial services for Mr. Nugent were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 25, 2006 at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Pearson, GA with Father Gabe Cummings officiating and a scripture reading by Beth Clark Morrison and Stanley Mizell. Special musical selections included "How Great Thou Art" rendered by the congregation with Michele White accompanying at the organ, "Sweet Bye and Bye" rendered by soloist, Michele Davis with accompaniment on the guitar and "Amazing Grace" rendered by soloist, Joy Pinckard, acappella. Soft music for the prelude and postlude was provided by Michele White, organist. The interment followed in Holy Family Cemetery. Relihan Funeral Home of Pearson, GA was in charge of the arrangements.
