Betty Jean Beaver Phillips was born in Decatur, MS on May 7, 1942, and was the se second child of Marion and Pearl Beaver. She attended school there and gr graduated from Decatur, H.S. in 1960. Following her graduation from Southern MS wi with a Bachelors Degree in Music Ed. She moved to GA because of a job op opportunity in Hazlehurst where she was band director for several years. She th then moved to Atkinson Co. where she taught the remainder of her career. She re retired from teaching in 2007 after 42 years of service. While in Atkinson Co. Betty taught chorus and band in all the schools as well a as working with the cheerleaders and majorettes on occasion. Her students will r remember her for her joyous and positive attitude and constant encouragement of t their efforts. She touched thousands of students. Motivating them by her s selections of the popular music of each generation. One of her greatest pleasures was meeting with the Red Hat Society. She loved dressing up in her red and purple regalia and just having fun with the “girls.” She was a former member and past treasurer of the Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary teacher She was a former member and past treasurer of the Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary teacher’s sorority with membership by invitation only. Betty was a m member of the Pearson United Methodist Church, where her service through the y years included leading the congregational singing, directing the choir and w working with a youth group once a week. She was a member and current president o of the United Methodist Women, where monthly luncheon meetings were held in her h home. Many times Betty crossed denominational lines to direct Christmas C Cantatas, participate in special musical programs and assist with a puppet m ministry at the First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her brother, Billy Beaver and her nephew, Tim Beaver. Beaver. Survivors include; nephew, Greg Beaver of Meridian, MS; sister-in-law, Carol Bea Beaver of Meridian, MS and close friend, Blenda Doran of Argyle, GA and Candice Bro Brown of Pearson, GA. A candlelight memorial service was held at 5 p.m. Friday, November 18, 2011 at Pe Pearson United Methodist Church in Pearson, GA with Rev. Evelyn Duval and Rev. Ri Rip Snow officiating. The eulogy was given by her friend Blenda Doran. Special mu music was provided by Candice Brown, pianist. The interment will be in Decatur Ce Cemetery in Decatur, MS.
